Located at the mouth of Pearl River, Lantau Island is the largest outlying island in Hong Kong. Lantau Island is well known for its immaculate nature with half of the area being protected as national parks. As Hong Kong island is the heart of Hong Kong, Lantau island is compared to as the lungs of Hong Kong. Lantau island is also significant culturally and historically with many ancient artifacts unearthed on the island dated back to the Bronze Age.
Once the Lantau island was known as fishing villages, the island has now turned into a more modern city with several compounds including Hong Kong’s new international airport and the newest craze in town, the Hong Kong Disneyland. However, the island is also famous for its cultural heritage which is the Tian Tian Buddha statue. It is an 85-foot-high bronze Buddha statue which is referred as the “Giant Buddha.”
Moreover, Hong Kong is also comprised of over 200 outlying islands of which Lantau island is considered a part. A majority of the islands lies in the south and southwest and is offered to as Sai Kung District. These islands are popular tourist destinations for those who seek rural atmosphere.
