Seventh Goddess’ Day is a day for Chinese people to pay respect to Tsat-je, the seventh daughter of Emperor from the heaven. It is also a celebration of love very similar to Valentine’s Day.
Every year, the Seventh Goddess’ Day is held on the seventh day of seventh month in Chinese lunar calendar. In Hong Kong, this year’s sweet love festival will be held on August 26, 2009. It is a good opportunity for couples to express their feelings. Seventh Goddess’ Day is popular among Hong Kong locals, especially younger lovers, and there are decorations on the streets, shops, and restaurants in some areas. Many merchants around Hong Kong will sell fresh flowers, small gifts, and fresh fruits for this romantic occasion.
Based on Chinese legend, one version of the love story is that Tsat-je, the goddess known for her beauty and skill at weaving, came down to the earth with her sisters to take a bath. She fell in love with the orphaned cow-herder while on earth and she does not go back to the heaven until after she marries the cow-herder and they have children together.
It is said that her parent are angry because of her absence and order her to return to heaven. Both Tsat-je and the cowherd are deeply saddened and the parents, out of pity, agree that the lover’s be allowed to meet each other once a year on the seventh day of seventh lunar month.
Traditionally, Chinese people value the story of the weaving maid and women will ask for success in love from the seventh goddess and young ladies will often pray for having a good husband. On Seventh Goddess’ Day one of the games played is for the lady who can thread seven needles under the moonlight; that person can make a wish and it will be fulfilled by the power of love between the seventh goddess and the cow-herder.
Join in the fun and celebration on this special day for finding love!!
